Helleborus, one of Britians oldest cultivars thought to be introduced by the Romans, also used by the Gauls as poison on the tips of arrows. Nowadays planted closer to homes to keep away witches and evil spirits and even thunderbolts. Up to the 17th Century used as a cure for the insane, the name alone says it all: hellin 'to kill' and bora 'food'.
